Submarine Cable Activity
Our reach is growing, more so with our participation in new submarine cable systems like LION2, which completes our connectivity offering along East Africa and significantly improves latencies on the islands off the East African coast. As a shareholder in TEAMS, LION2, EASSy and PEACE submarine cable systems, we are at the heart of the largest network of submarine cables in the region. In order to provide diversity, we have also invested in capacity on the Seacom submarine cable system. The TEAMS, EASSy, LION2 and PEACE landing stations are hosted and managed by Telkom.
DARE1

The Djibouti Africa Regional Express 1(DARE1) submarine cable system connects Djibouti (Djibouti), Bosaso (Somalia), Mogadishu (Somalia) and Mombasa (Kenya). With a finalized route length of 4,854km, DARE1 cable system delivers up to 36 Tbps of capacity to East Africa. The DARE1 Cable was ready for service in 2021.

The DARE1 cable system is designed with a three-fibre-pair trunk, with each fibre pair delivering capacity of 120 channels at 100 Gbps. The Bosaso branch of the DARE1 cable is of 108 km and two fiber pairs.

The DARE1 consortium is currently composed of Djibouti Telecom, Somtel, Hormuud Telecom and Telkom Kenya as landing partner in Kenya.

EASSy

Eastern Africa Submarine System (EASSy) is a 10,000km submarine cable system along the east coast of Africa, with 9 landing stations in Sudan, Djibouti, Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Comoros, Madagascar, Mozambique and South Africa, provides a backhaul system for at least 12 landlocked countries, enabling wide coverage in the East African region. Telkom Kenya is the Landing Party Provider at Mombasa.

The EASSy cable system was ready for service in July 2010.

The system has currently deployed a latest upgrade with Ciena’s GeoMesh Extreme solutions to reach a system capacity of 36Tbps.

TEAMS

The East African Marine Systems (TEAMS) is a 5,500Km subsea cable connecting Mombasa in Kenya to Fujairah in the UAE, with two fiber pairs and upgradable system capacity of 5.6Tbps.

TEAMS cable system is 85% owned by TEAMs (Kenya) Ltd and 15% owned by Etisalat of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The shareholders of TEAMS (Kenya) Ltd includes:

  • 20% – Government of Kenya
  • 23% – Telkom Kenya

The TEAMS cable system was ready for service on 1st October 2009. TEAMS cable is hosted at Telkom’s facility in Mombasa.

LION2
The LION2 (Lower Indian Ocean NetWork II) is a 2700km submarine cable network connecting LION1 to Mayotte and Mombasa, Kenya. The LION2 is an extension of the LION1 Submarine Cable. The LION2 consortium includes France Telecom-Orange, Mauritius Telecom, Orange Madagascar and Telkom Kenya, Emtel, Societe Reunionnaise du Radiotelephone (SRR) Telkom Kenya is the landing party in Kenya

The portal is a web application accessible on any web browser.

Yes, one is able to define customized limit notifications/ alerts allowing the SIM to receive an email or SMS notifying them that the set limit has been reached. E.g 50%, 75% and 90%.

Mobility profiles are defined and customized by the customer thereby raising an alert when the SIM user has consumed the allocated allowable resources. 

The platform has multiple level access allowing different users to have different views based on their business needs.  

Through bulk or individual SIM administration, the portal allows customers to add, remove or edit SIM allocations through People Directory

The customer will have visibility of all consumption costs and traffic down to an individual SIM which will assist them in identifying any potential abuse of services

Yes, the customer has the capability to customize and define data allocation within a Mobility Profile which then can be associated to a single or multiple SIMs on an APN.

The Report library within the portal allows users to predefine reports including the schedule of reporting 

The portal provides detailed reports from granular SIM reports to analytical reports that show total spend over a set period of time.
